Dating an old MK50H

Post by syscokid » Sat Oct 26, 2013 6:24 pm

Hello to all,

I just recently signed up to this forum to help out a friend with his recently acquired used Cornford MK50H. The High Input jack was completely loose, and the nut assembly to hold the jack in place was completely off. In order to reinstall the jack, I needed to pull out the chassis. Meanwhile we noticed the signature of what appears to be Martin Kidd's and a date. To us, the date is not fully legible, and we don't know much about the history of Cornford. I did try to contact Mr Kidd by various methods, but obviously none have been successful. Hopefully, anybody with some expertise at this forum can verify the date on following picture...please.

I forgot to take a pic of the serial number, or write it down, but I think it was #0093. I'm reading the date as December the 11th, and the year 0-something.

Looks like 12th Nov 2002 to me. I have an older one too, if I get chance I'll take the chassis out and have a look over the weekend.

Hi,
The date is in the UK format which is 12th November. The year looks like either 2001 or 2002. My MK50 is serial No 00159 which was built in May 2003 as signed and dated by Martin Kidd. I think it is more likely to be November 2001 as if it was 2002 that's 66 hand built amps in 6 months which is quite a lot especially as Cornford was a pretty small Company back in those days.

Hope this helps

Thank you very much for the info, so far.
I got a chance to play this amp for about an hour, and I was very impressed. Actually we all were! My friend also purchased the matching 4x12 cab that came with the deal. He works at the Ernie Ball Music Man guitar factory in San Luis Obispo, California, USA. EBMM gave their employees an opportunity thru an auction to purchase some of their equipment. Lets just say he won the auction at a unbelievable deal. The cosmetic condition of the head is 9 out of 10, and the cab is a 7 out of 10. I'm very jealous... :shifty:

What a result...lucky chap! As you can tell from the insides...these amps are so well made and designed...no surprise they sound so sweet.

As a follow up to this thread...Mr Kidd had graciously responded on Nov 5:

HI Greg,

Apologies for the delayed response but I've had a job finding this info out for myself. It would seem that the amp was made by myself, as all Cornford MK50s were up to this point (aside from about five that were made by Len Sorrell), on the 12th November 2001 and shipped to Music Man for use at the 2002 January NAMM show. This is my signature inside the chassis, too.

I hope this info helps.

Kind regards,

Martin
