2 x Harlequin or 1 x Hurricane to get a louder Harlequin?

Post by Carl » Wed Jan 08, 2014 11:20 am

I really like my Harlequin, but unfortunately it's not loud enough for rehearsals and gigs. My trusty old 76 Super Lead was my main amp for many year, but it too loud, I also have Lead 50w head but it's almost as loud as the SL, so my main amp has been a Roadhouse 30 for the last couple of years. It's great and a perfect low powered substitute for my vintage Marshalls, but there is something about my Harlequin, which I really, really like, so it would be great to have a gigging powered Harlequin.

So I have been thinking about either getting a Hurricane or a second Harlequin. Which alternative do you thing will bring me to a closest to slightly higher powered Harlequin?

(BTW, yes I have tried reamping it with a bigger clean power amp fed by a THD Hotplate, but it didn't sound as good as any of my Cornfords alone)

Can you not mic-up your Harlequin through a PA?

Our rehearsal studio is too small for that and live it will be too complicated for the kind of small venues that we normally play at. i don't even use a monitor live, because I am not singing.

But otherwise it's a great idea to use very small amps live and use a proper monitor system with multiple monitor mixes.

I have tried it with two really good vintage 4x12s, but it changes the sound to much. IMO the Cornford combos only sound right to me with their built in speakers. I also have a very similar open back Marshall 1x12 cab (C12) loaded with the same driver as my Harlequin (UK made V30) but it does sound like the Harlequin's speaker.

A Cornford 1x12 cab would be an alternative but I doubt that it will make it loud enough.

The question is really if the Hurricane sound like a more powerful Harlequin, or if the only solution is more Harlequins..?

BTW we rehearsed last night and the Roadhouse Combo is a truly amazing amp. R9 Les Paul with BB1 in the bridge position via a Himmelstruz Fetto Deluxe overdrive to a Roadhouse 30 combo is probably the best Les Paul/Marshall sound I have ever heard at a sensible volume level.

Having the Harlequin sound at a similar volume level would be great. 12-20w would be ideal My 50w Marshall head is power scaled (to 190V in the power amp) which I understand would correspond to a 12-15w amp and the Hot Plate which I use with my old Super Lead is set to -12dB which would power-wise put it in the same ball park as two Harlequins och one Hurricane.
