Roadhouse 50 combo speakers + cab??

Post by tandark » Mon Jul 14, 2014 11:14 am

Hi folks, finally got my hands on an R50 and I LOVE the thing.

Quick question from an amp novice (apologies if this has been asked before, I have looked!): I was wondering if it would be possible to connect the combo to an extension cab AND the internal speakers simultneously. Would this work with a 4 x 12 cab? Just thinking about future gigging options.

Thanks for your time. Proud to be an owner (albeit it second hand  )
Andy.

on the RH30c you can so you must too...

You need to plug the speaker out to the relevant ohm setting. So if (like me) you have an external 1x12 (with V30 too!) then you plug into the 4 ohm socket as per pic... if a 4x10 then you select 16 ohm

!!! YOU MUST go back to the 8 ohm when using internal speaker only though !!!

Here imy RC30C s driving TWO x V30 speakers -ne internal and of course both rated 8ohms

Still toying with:
PRS Soapbar ll, Les Paul Studio, Yamaha SG2000s, Gibson 335, 1973 Strat
into a Cornford Roadhouse 30 Combo (+ ext 1x12 V30)

So your external 1 x 12 is 8 ohms I presume? If I plug into a 16 ohm 4 x 12 then do I put the internal speakers AND the external speakers into the 8 ohm sockets?

No .. You plug the cab into the 16 ohm socket and leave the internal speakers disconnected.
If you must use the combo speaker too, you need to change the speaker to a 16 ohm driver.

Rule of thumb: plug into the output closest to the sum-value of the speakers connected.

As a parallel 8 and 16 ohm load will give a total of 5.33 ohms you'd need to plug both into the 4 ohm outputs on the amp. It's not the most sophisticated solution but it'll work, don't worry !

Another thing is that this will affect the bandwith your rig will put out. Some like that and some don't. Experimenting is key...

I've got the roadhouse 50 which has a 16ohm tap. presumably the vintage 30's inside are 16ohm drivers...

I've now rehearsed with it and used the internal speakers and an external 16ohm 4x12, both connected into the 8ohm taps with no issues. In fact it sounded enourmous. My problem is I'm using an EHX POG2 with some pretty low end settings, so contemplating going into an appropriate bass cab instead with an 8ohm rating, so i can use both 4ohm connections - 1 for internal speaker, 1 for external. Fingers crossed!
