My MK50 H II doing Van Halen - Aftershock

Post by donnyboiler » Sun Apr 12, 2015 1:16 pm

Hey guys,

One of the first things I did with my new Cornford was record this track. Cab at the time was an EVH 4x12 with the Greenbacks although I have a Cornford cab now.

This was recorded with a single SM57 straight into Logic. All the stereo FX were added afterwards for the full VH effect! There are two versions, one W/D/W and one W/D, so listen in stereo if you can.

Hope you enjoy.

Apart from the full throttle single coil part, that sounded awesome !

The shred bit is bridge humbucker. You didn't like it?

Sounded fantastic to me ... that is exactly the Cornford sound in my head - the jangly/chimey/bitey clarity in the treble but without fizz and retaining the 3d creamy mid range overdrive. Sounds more like my Hellcat than I expected too - but I setup my HC quite like this and many people seem to record MK50IIs in pure metal mode rather than the EVH-style super-clear-OD you've done here. Everytime I hear this sound I think this is what I expect a Marshall to sound like ... but it just doesn't quite. Wierd really given that the sounds in our heads should be Marshalls ... maybe with old PTP wiring, the various mods and old tubes they were closer to a modern Cornford than a modern Marshall.

I agre. It's like the plexi DNA got transferred to these, but filtered through all the added features. They've got the plexi growl and snarl in the mids but with that Cornford special sauce. They clean up like a plexi, they have the loose but tight feel of a plexi, the low end punch, but they've got all the modern features. Best amp I've ever had.

All GAS for another Bogner has stopped completely, all the Bogner features and switches and overly chewy midrange seem silly to me now (great amps though). I get just as much midrange character from this without any of the compromises in feel and clarity.

Modern Marshalls can sod off. I had a couple of JVM Satrianis which I thought were their best in years but the MK has more dirt textures with a twist of your volume knob than the HJS had with four channels and 12 modes. Not to mention a way better clean and feel/low end to die for.

The only other amp I still love is my EVH 5150III, just because it does the medium to high gain thing differently. It's more compressed, more visceral, more saturated and tighter. That's a very useful option to have and it holds its own very well in terms of quality.

So now you just need a Hellcat, RK100 and a MK50 to cover all the bases :)
