Looking at the circuit I believe the Fet simply engages/ switches the boost pot in series with the gain pot. Try turning the boost to zero en engage, you will notice no difference. Both pots are 250K values, putting them in series will add up to a total of 500k is like turning your volume pot on your guitar wide open.
